The runner’s up for The Finder’s Best Coffee of 2021 would go to hardware-store-turned-coffee joint, Chye Seng Huat Hardware, nestled along Tyrwhitt Road. Nip around the shophouse’s facade, and what greets you upon entering the (literally) post-industrial space is a massive central bar. 3. Old Hen Coffee Bar

18. Baristart Coffee

Sure, the quality of coffee beans matters when making a good cup of coffee but did you know that the milk used plays an important role too? From its original outlet in Hokkaido to its branch here, Baristart Coffee is determined to teach customers about the quality of milk that comes from this Japanese region. More than half of the milk in Japan is produced in Hokkaido; its cool climate and vast farmland contribute to the uncompromising quality of milk.

Apart from the usual coffee drinks, there are other fun coffee options in the form of desserts that are worth a try. Have a go at the Brown Sugar Boba Coffee Jelly ($8.50) or get a range with the Sweets Jar list ($8.50), a rich, creamy dessert served in a glass jar, and Shaved Ice with coffee-flavoured syrup ($9.80), served in the shape of a bear. So cute, we (almost) couldn’t bear to eat it.

19. Five Oars Coffee Roasters

Just stepping into this cafe will make you fall in love with it, thanks to its “industrial” look. The minimalist decor and lush greenery make it a must-visit for anyone looking for a new Instagram-worthy location.

The minimalist theme stretches to its coffee menu too, as you won’t get a list of drinks like cappuccino or latte (although you can request for them from the baristas) – coffees are instead listed as black, white, iced or hot (from $3). The cafe has two house blends, which are rotated every two weeks or so. Seasonal single-origin beans are served too. And if you prefer filtered coffee, you can get it here as well, served using a pour-over process (from $6).

20. Strangers’ Reunion

This cafe has been extremely popular with coffee lovers since it opened in 2012. It’s no surprise that the brews are top-notch; after all, its owner Ryan Kieran Tan has come up tops in the Singapore National Barista Championship a good three times.

What all this means is that its staff know exactly what they’re doing when they’re making your coffee, plus they also make it look very pretty (we certainly appreciate the art involved). The cafe sources for coffee beans from all around the world and roasts them in-house. Customers can choose an espresso-based cuppa or pick their filter brews prepared using one of four brewing methods: Aeropress, Syphon, Wave Dripper or Iced Brew, each of which highlight different attributes of the single-origin coffee beans used.

21. Tiong Hoe Specialty Coffee

Mr. Tan Tiong Hoe has devoted his life to coffee, starting a coffee business (Tiong Hoe & Co) in the 1960s, after a short apprenticeship in a Dutch firm, Mirandolle & Voute. In 2014, Tiong Hoe Specialty Coffee was set up to sell mainly specialty coffee with quality scores of 80 points and above.

While it deals mostly in selling its freshly roasted coffee beans and coffee-making accessories, it also has a very small area where you can sit and enjoy your cuppa. Tiong Hoe gets its coffee from renowned coffee traders from Central/South America, Africa and Asia, through direct farm purchase and at coffee auctions. You’ll enjoy the heady aroma of coffee as you walk in and it’s definitely worth multiple visits as the coffee blends are served on a rotational basis.

22. Apartment Coffee

This cafe believes that every cup of coffee tells a story, from the type of variety to where it’s grown and the people behind the brew. The type of coffee served depends on the time of year, based on the origins in season at the time. So, for example, March to June features roasts from Burundi, Rwanda, Colombia and Brazil, while July to October sees cups of java from Tanzania, Kenya, Ethiopia and some Centrals.

Even though this is based on the estimated harvest every year, it could change depending on factors such as climate and shipping. But what this means is, there’s a different coffee on the menu every few weeks so coffee lovers have the opportunity to “travel” around the world through their favourite drink. Another thing we love about the place? Its bright, clean and minimalist white-washed decor.

23. Bacha Coffee

Coffee lovers would be thrilled to know Bacha Coffee has over 200 single origin beans and flavoured coffees! It all began in 1910 Marrakesh, Morrocco, in the Dar el Bacha palace, which means “house of the Pasha”, where it connected coffee lovers and experts all around the world. This sequestered cafe joint in Amoy Street can be easily missed. The mini coffee bar and takeaway kiosk sources its coffee beans directly from local farms and roasted in-house. The promise is to serve unpretentious coffee to the working crowd at the heart of the CBD. Convenient, simple and high quality. 25. Forty Hands

Common Man Coffee Roasters owner, Harry Grover, first opened Forty Hands. This humble cafe boasts fresh roasted coffee with a mission of sustainability and direct trade. Baristas are sent to the CMCR Academy to keep skills sharp and ensure the best cuppa for you.

The usual coffees go from $5, while you can also get bottled coffee beverages like the Honey Oat Latte ($42 for 300ml). Plus, Forty Hands has a limited edition Iced Bubble Coffee ($9.50), using espresso with gula melaka caramel and caramel infused golden pearls. Sounds to die for.

26. Oriole Coffee + Bar

A favourite brunch spot amongst the Orchard crowd, Oriole has amassed coffee lovers locally and around the world. Its founder, Keith Loh, is the winner of Singapore National Barista Championships (SNBC) in 2010. The premium Arabica coffee beans are roasted locally than brewed at Oriole. Check out the unique coffee creations such as the Death Cream ($13), a secret recipe that has hints of vanilla with espresso and cream, or the M.A.D Milk ($10) for plant-based lattes made of macadamia and almond milk sweetened with dates. Amongst the many cafes in Upper Thomson is Thus Coffee. This humble and homey cafe aims to serve quality food and beverages at an affordable price to its local community. Coffee beans are freshly micro-roasted in store, an added little bonus to the delicious food menu to pair with your cuppa. Coffees start from $4.50, and check out the Green Shot ($6.50), a blend of coffee and matcha. Don’t forget to snap a pic of the adorable latte art. 30. Glass Roasters

Nestled in Faber Drive, Glass Roasters is a cosy, quaint cafe situated in the West Coast that serves aromatic coffee brews made from Colombian beans. It’s known for its Instagrammable aesthetic, with visitors noting its similarity to Korean-style cafes.

Frequenters have also noted that its coffee are a little more on the acidic side, so if that’s what tickles your fancy, this may be the coffeehouse to go to. Black coffees start at $4.50 and white will cost you a dollar more. (Non-dairy options are available.)

The local choice: Kopi

Sometimes nothing beats a good cup of kopi. Famous chains like Kopitiam and Ya Kun Kaya Toast can be found all around the island, selling Kopi starting from $1.50. These coffee beans are traditionally wok roasted with sugar and margarine, then grounded and brewed with a cotton strainer.
